How to Choose a Roofer: What to Ask and What to Avoid
Not all roofers are equal — and the wrong choice can cost you far more than a competitive quote saves. Here's how to pick the right one.

Roofing is one of the trades where the gap between good and poor operators is most consequential. A bad roof can cause thousands of pounds of water damage inside a property. Choosing the right roofer is at least as important as choosing the right materials. Here's how to approach it.
Always Get a Written Quote
Any reputable roofer should be happy to provide a written, itemised quote specifying exactly what work will be carried out, what materials will be used and the total price. A verbal quote or a price scrawled on a piece of paper offers you no protection if the work isn't done properly. If a contractor is reluctant to put it in writing, move on.
Check They're Fully Insured
Roofing work carries genuine risk — to your property, to neighbours' properties and to the workers themselves. Your contractor should carry public liability insurance as a minimum. Ask to see evidence of it before work starts. Any legitimate contractor will provide this without hesitation.
Ask About Their Guarantee
What guarantee do they offer on their workmanship? A good roofer will stand behind what they've installed. Be clear on what the guarantee covers, how long it lasts and what the process is if something goes wrong.
Look at Reviews
Google reviews, Checkatrade and similar platforms give you an unfiltered view of how a contractor actually behaves on the job — communication, tidiness, whether they do what they say. A company with no online presence at all isn't necessarily bad, but verified reviews add a meaningful layer of confidence.
Red Flags to Avoid
Be cautious of: unsolicited door-knockers claiming to have 'just been working nearby' and spotted a problem with your roof; anyone demanding full cash payment upfront; quotes significantly lower than others without explanation; contractors who can't provide proof of insurance; and high-pressure tactics to sign or pay on the spot.
