EPDM Rubber vs Torch-On Felt: Which Flat Roof System Is Right for You?
If you're replacing a flat roof, you'll likely be choosing between EPDM rubber and torch-on felt. Both are solid choices — but they suit different situations and budgets.

If you're replacing a flat roof on your extension, garage, or porch, there are two systems we recommend at Bright Top Roofing: EPDM rubber and torch-on felt. Both are reliable, long-lasting solutions that perform well in West Yorkshire's wet climate — but they differ in cost, lifespan, and the situations where each works best.
What Is EPDM Rubber Roofing?
EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) is a synthetic rubber membrane that has been used in commercial roofing since the 1960s. It comes in large, flexible sheets that are bonded to the roof deck. Because it can be installed in a single piece on most roofs, there are no joins — which eliminates one of the most common failure points in flat roofing. EPDM is highly resistant to UV radiation, extreme temperatures and ponding water, making it particularly well-suited to the British climate.
What Is Torch-On Felt Roofing?
Torch-on felt (also known as torch-on membrane or SBS modified bitumen) is a multi-layer system applied using a gas torch. Each layer is heat-bonded to the one below, creating a strong, weatherproof finish. It's a well-established method with decades of use across the UK and, when properly installed using quality materials, delivers a reliable and long-lasting flat roof at a competitive cost.
Lifespan
EPDM rubber has a proven track record of 50+ years — many EPDM roofs installed in the 1970s are still performing today. Quality torch-on felt systems, using modern SBS modified bitumen membranes, typically last 20–25 years with minimal maintenance. Both significantly outlast older-style mineral felt, which rarely lasts more than 10–15 years.
Cost
Torch-on felt is generally the more cost-effective option upfront. EPDM costs a little more per square metre to install, but its 50+ year lifespan means the cost per year of use often works out lower over the long term. For homeowners on a tighter budget who want a quality roof without the higher upfront investment, torch-on felt is a very sound choice.
Which One Should You Choose?
EPDM is our first recommendation for most flat roofs — particularly extensions, garage roofs and porches where you want a long-term solution with virtually no maintenance. If budget is a primary consideration, or if the roof is smaller in area, a quality torch-on felt installation is an excellent alternative that will give many years of reliable performance.
